Blogging for Aviation History

Monday, September 24, 2007   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Just under two months after its introduction, this blog is approaching 40 posts. Even if this is still only a beginning, that's probably more than even a dedicated first-time visitor would care to browse through, so perhaps the whole of this section is aged enough to make some comparisons.

Before starting this site I was struck by the relative lack of aviation-related blogs on the web, particularly those dealing with aviation history. This is despite the the apparent explosion in the number of military history blogs on the web during this year (full story here). It would appear that either there has been a reluctance among aviation history enthusiasts and modellers alike to catch up on the trend, or that aviation blogs are there, but have had problems in gaining publicity.

Here is my personal review of blogs devoted to aviation history.

  • Airminded ยท Airpower and British society, 1908-1941 focuses on eclectic mix of topics from the pre-ww2 period, including aviation and its influence on the society. The blog is a part of historical research project by Brett Holman from Australia. I find Brett's topics highly interesting and worth returning to.

  • Another fruit of serious research work is the Dictatorship of the Air site. In addition to excerpts from the book "Dictatorship of the Air: Aviation Culture and the Fate of Modern Russia," this site, created by Dr. Scott W. Palmer includes blog devoted to Russian aviation, history and related matters.

  • The Warbirds Online blog is officially described as "news and commentary of the international warbird community", but has actually a good lightweight mixture of general aviation and history-related content. Created by Scott Rose and Ryan Keough.

  • Flightstory Aviation Blog is devoted mostly to civil aviation news.

  • The Spitfire Site blog is naturally only just taking off and its formula hasn't settled yet. Nevertheless, comparing with other blogs on this list I feel that it has a role to play.

If you know any other nice aviation history blog that I missed, please let me know, I will gladly add it to this list.
