RAF 90th Anniversary Festival - summarizing

Monday, May 05, 2008   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Almost exactly one month ago I have initiated the RAF 90th Anniversary Festival to celebrate this important milestone and try to populate this site with more articles, photographs, art and other material related to the Royal Air Force and its long history.

How did we succeeed? Let's have an overview of all the festival contributions in April and new additions pending this month.

Summarizing, it is apparent that April was one of the most fruitful months on the Spitfire Site so far. It is fantastic, and showed up well through the editorial workload - I had a hard time coping with all the material I've been receiving. I'd like to direct a warm thank you to everyone who contributed their work and material to make it happen. My apologies to those few who are still waiting to get their contributions published - none has been forgotten and they will appear online as soon as I can possibly manage.

The RAF Anniversary Festival will continue for some time to come, so please keep the articles and photos coming.

In the meantime, I'm into some serious programming trying to establish a discussion forum for all of us Spitfire buffs. I'll keep you posted.

  • A new video has been added in the Video Section tonight. Entitled "Spitfire Guardians", it is a promotional clip for the commercial Spitfire documentary produced for the History Channel. Although short, it is a commendable piece in its own right.

Updated 7-10 December

Monday, December 10, 2007   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

It's been a rather busy weekend which resulted in several new pages on the site, and a few more in preparation. Our new additions include:
  • A new image in the Historic Photographs section. This one is showing Spitfire Mk. V of No. 453 Squadron RAAF with lots of detail useful also for modellers.

  • New video has been added in the Video Section. This one, for a change, is a genuinely old RAF instructional film providing an overview of daily maintenance duties on Spitfire Mk. I.

  • Last but not least, today's addition in the History section is the first installment of the new reference feature, RAF Airfields in Mainland Europe, 1944-45. Added today is the introductory part and two portions of the airfield listing which cover 2nd TAF operations in France.

The last article is somewhat special in that it offers interactive features. Based on the available data, I have included geolocation links for each airfield. If you have Google Earth on your computer (or a comparable geography browser), this feature will give you an opportunity for virtual sightseeing of airfield locations. I can heartily recommend spending a few moments doing this - it's an educational experience. Indeed, many of the airfields and installation still exist today, but spotting the traces of war in satellite images makes for an interesting challenge. Give it a try. If you don't have Google Earth, you can download it for free here.

Avro Vulcan XH558 in the air - video

Tuesday, October 30, 2007   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Completing my previous post about the first post-restoration flight of the mighty Avro Vulcan at Bruntingthorpe, Leicestershire, here is an excellent video from this flight produced by PlanesTV. It surely is fantastic to see her her up in the air where she belongs.

The 34-minute test flight marked the spectacular end of a 10-year effort, and the start of a new phase in the life of this amazing aircraft. Here is another video clip produced by BBC Leicester showing a potted history of its restoration.

However, financial considerations still apply: funds have to be found to keep her flying. The first flight has given the Vulcan a massive publicity boost and therefore good chance of securing commercial sponsorship, but this is a critical task that must be secured soon if the Vulcan is to be kept flying and displayed at public events.

More information, including an option to make an e-donation, can be found at the Vulcan to the Sky Trust site.

Lastly, one more video clip from the take-off, giving an even better impression about the mighty sound of this aircraft. Turn up the volume...

Here are new additons for today.

  • Two new images with well-researched descriptions have been added in Historic Photographs section. Both images are the first photos at this site coming from private collections, and at least one of them has, to my knowledge, never been published before. Let's hope to see more such contributions in the future! (subject to copyright review)

  • Also, we have a new video have been added in the Video Section, this time of the oldest flying Spitfire Mk. II P7350.

Avro Vulcan XH558 Back In the Air

Thursday, October 18, 2007   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

This news is not about the Spitfire, or even World War II, but I simply couldn't resist commenting on what has to be the milestone and great news for the entire warbird movement.

Easily the largest warbird in the world, Avro Vulcan XH558 made its premiere in the air today, flying this afternoon from Bruntingthorpe airfield in Leicestershire.

Pictures from today's flight can be viewed through the following links:

The Vulcan to the Sky Trust website should be the first source of information, but their site crashed today, undoubtedly due to the tremendous traffic pressure. I bet the webmaster is wawy tonight, celebrating with the rest of the group :)

We have some video material, too. First, a somewhat emotional video showing her undergoing the restoration at Bruntingthorpe, filmed in August.

Here's a video showing her post-restoration rollout ceremony at Bruntingthorpe on 1 September 2007 to the sound of brass orchestra playing the Star Wars theme. Yikes!

The last time XH558 flew previously was in March 1993. Here is a video showing her last public appearances during the 1992 airshow season.

Spitfire Mk. XVI Airshow Debut in Sweden

Wednesday, October 17, 2007   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

One of the newest completed Spitfire restorations, a Mk. XVIe RW386 NG-D had its debut last month at the airshow circuit in Sweden, its new home country. The aircraft was purchased in May by the Swedish company Biltema and is currently based at Ängelholm alongside with Biltema's other warbird, P-51D Mustang. RW386 is currently the only flying Spitfire based in Sweden.

Built Castle Bromwich in 1945 just after the and of hostilities in Europe, this Mk. XVI served initially with No. 604 (County of Middlesex) Squadron as NG-D. In 1952 it was relegated to the role of instructional airframe at No.1 School of Technical Training at RAF Halton, still carrying its 604 Sqn markings. It remained at Halton until 1982 when it was moved to RAF Hendon Museum. Restoration to airworthiness began at Audley End in 1992 but wasn't completed due to lack of finance and the aircraft remained in storage at North Weald until 2002. Acquired by Historic Flying Ltd, new restoration commenced in 2002. It had its first post-restoration flight at Duxford in March 2007. Sold to Biltema, it arrived in Sweden on 30 May 2007. Its public debut in Sweden took place on 10 September at Borås air show.

The number of airworthy Spitfires in the world is steadily increasing. The Biltema Spitfire and the recent Mk. V flown in New Zealand brings the total number of airworthy Spitfires restored since the Battle of Britain movie to around 70.

RW386 can bew viewed through the following links:

Updated 14 October

Sunday, October 14, 2007   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

I have been assured by the ISP yesterday that the server change has been entirely completed and indeed, everything seems to work fine right now. Without further delay here are the updates for tonight.

The first of these is another new section of the site, the previously announced Art & Memorabilia. This section is intended as a virtual gallery of Spitfire-related art, memorabilia and collectibles. I have always thought that aviation art should be an obvious addition to this site, as over the years an entire crowd of aviation artists have selected the Spitfire as an inspiration for their work. Also, Spitfire memorabilia are among those most sought-after by aviation collectors. In sum, putting together a kind of online gallery of such items would make for a highly interesting corner on the web.

A particularly intriguing item among those which initiate the gallery today is the aluminium desktop model from the Castle Bromwich Aircraft Factory, a family keepsake of J P Corbin. J P seeks contact with anyone who worked at the CBAF and could possibly provide more information about the item.

Other updates tonight are:

  • A new pair of images have been added in Historic Photographs section

  • Two new videos can be viewed in the Video Section, including an hour-long converage from Duxford Flying Legends 2007.

  • Also, don't miss the two other "founding" additions in Art & Memorabilia.

With these additons the site navigation menu to the left has grown even further as to give an impression of what its final shape might be. I must say I'm a bit overwhelmed by the rapidly expanding scope of this site - I guess I'm starting to realize what I got myself into! And I haven't even started with warbird restorations, camouflage and markings, or continued with my book... oh dear. Anyway, I will review the front page to see if a better overview of all new additions could be given, preferably automatically with some clever scripting.

Wednesday, October 03, 2007   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Yesterday I have initiated another new section on the site, this one holding a collection of videos.

  • The Video Section has been initiated with 24 video clips in categories: Airshows, Computer-generated, Flight simulators, Museums, Radio-controlled, Warbirds.

Work on this section started only yesterday and I'm quite proud to mention that all set-up work plus posting fifteen or so initial videos took only a bit more than two hours. Something like this has never happened to me before as a webmaster... I feel know that this site is finally residing on a solid platform and that the results may indeed translate to increased editorial efficiency. Good news. I will certainly continue to explore these possibilities.

I must admit that I haven't initially planned for an excessive video library on this site. However, I felt that providing sights and sounds of the Spitfire, particularly in the air, was important to make the user experience of the Spitfire complete. Only later when the site was already published I took time to examine YouTube's enormous library of video clips and its use policies and noticed that there were many interesting videos which could be embedded in a site like this one. And so the idea was born.

Selecting and posting videos from YouTube and other sources (and admittedly, some of the better ones are not very easy to find), I will apply my normal editorial standards in terms of video quality, credits, and copyright policies.

The initial set of 24 videos represents a wide range of subjects, from airshows through documentaries to RC models and computer animations. This breadth is intentional. One of the interesting aspects of the Spitfire and its wartime history is the impression it has left on the collective mind of the society and popular culture, through things like movies, gaming, art, memorabilia, modelling. Therefore, rock videos or anime with the Spitfire have their place on this site, too - even if they, in the strict sense, could not stand the test of historical accuracy. We have one such video uploaded already.

Roar of the Merlins

Tuesday, September 25, 2007   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Check this brilliant video showing a pair of de Havilland Mosquitos and Supermarine Spitfires in flight. If you consider the Spitfire to look stylish in the air, I'd say that this movie clip proves that the Mosquito was a very close contender indeed.

And before you ask about where these images were taken: this film is computer-generated. And yes, I found it hard to believe, too. It is done so well that there aren't any obvious give aways; maybe only that the Mossies move just a bit too steady through the air when zooming the field at low level, but that's just nit-picking. If you watched Flyboys or Pearl Harbor recently (just for the aerial sequences, not for the story), you should know how hard it is to make computer-generated aircraft to look and move so real.

Personally I'm convinced that a remake of The Battle Of Britain with these computer effects will occur, it is just a question of time. It would be more difficult to replace Laurence Olivier in the role of Dowding.

Some Display Flying in a Sim

Monday, September 17, 2007   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

The sad news of this weekend sets the tone also for today's addition. Tonight I found this flight sim video created in memory of Ray and Mark Hanna. It's a fitting tribute to great display pilots who could always show these old aircraft from their best side to keep theirs and our dream alive.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFoCxm5q_Ps

Please note that even for a simulator, that's some display flying (by Ben Lavender) and a well-produced video. Also, the aircraft shown is the very Spitfire MH434 that Ray Hanna flew on his displays (and just as low) for over 30 years.

A reflection comes to mind that maybe what we see in this video is the future of vintage air displays. As the virtual reality technology improves, in 10 years' time we might be gathering on the internet to experience air displays, with virtual aircraft flown by experienced virtual pilots roaring over our heads in precision display routines and mock dogfights.

It's not untinkable.

And If You Couldn't be in Duxford During the Weekend...

Sunday, September 09, 2007   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Continuing on the subject of Duxford airshow (see my previous post), here is a video from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's 50th Anniversary which took place there on 5th May 2007. Watching this you will see what I meant by stating that Duxford is the best place in the world to watch Spitfires in the air.

This and the preceding post are my first attempts at posting to this site directly from YouTube and I'm glad that it seems to work, albeit not entirely as problem-free as advertised. There will be more to follow. Enjoy.

Mark Hanna Flying the Spitfire

Friday, September 07, 2007   |   posted by Spitfire Site Editor   |   permalink

Here is a great Spitfire video I have located at You Tube today. This is a clip from commercial DVD called A Spitfires Story, showing one of the most popular Spitfires flying today, Mark IX ser. no. MH434. It is flown here by the late Mark Hanna who repeatedly beats up the Duxford airfield, flying straight towards the cameraman. As he banks away and around the field you get that classic beautiful silhouette of the Spitfire against dramatic cloudscapes. Spectacular, graceful and well filmed. It's such a wonderful aircraft in the hands of a fine pilot.
