In April, 1945 the Dutch resistance called upon the RAF to protect the Zuider Zee causeway from feared destruction by the retreating German Army. Should the dam be breached, large and densely populated areas of Holland would be flooded with sea water. Orders were issued to No. 132 (Norwegian) wing to maintain partols over the area and destroy German transports in the vicinity of the dam so that explosives could not be brought to destroy it.

This painting by Michael Short depicts a pair of Spitfires LF Mk. XVI of 127 Sqn. attacking German trucks on the Zuider Causeway. [Michael Short, via Andy Ingham]
