Another artwork by Pavel Rampír, Czech aviation artist and an illustrator of the Revi aviation journal. His latest drawing depicts Spitfire LF Mk. IX. Pencil on cardboard.
On the 19th of April 1944, the Spitfires of No. 313 (Czech) Squadron escorted a formation of American B-26 Marauder bombers on a mission to bomb the railway yard in Mechlin.
After bombing of the target, the mission was attacked by a formation of Focke-Wulf Fw 190s of Jagdeschwader 26.
In the resulting melee, W/O Arnost Mrtvy on his spitfire RY-E was engaged into a long dogfight with the Fw 190 "Blue 16" piloted by Hauptmann Wolfgang Neu. In the end, Mrtvy was shot down by Neu and wounded. He executed a forced landing in a field in Belgium, but before the first eye-witnesses reached the aircraft, he had already passed away.
