Spitfire Mk. VIII serving with the Royal Australian Air Force, ca. 1944. The battered item in the foreground is 30-gallon slipper tank. Similar tank is attached underneath the aircraft; extra tankage was essential for Spitfire operations in New Guinea. This photo could have been taken in New Guinea, but the exact place and unit are difficult to identify. The aircraft in the background is C-87 Liberator. [National Library of Australia]

Unlikely to have been New Guinea as the RAAF Spitfire VIIIs were never based there. More likely one of the Darwin strips or Morotai
