Anonymous RAF Spitfire Mk. Vc Trop is serviced on a Sicilian airfield, believed to be Comiso, alongside a Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 left behind by the previous owners, II/JG 53 'Pik As'. The time was probably August 1943. The RAF unit was not disclosed with the original photo caption, so perhaps readers can help with identifying it.
Interestingly, the Spitfire seems to have part of its lower surfaces - port wing and fuselage - painted in black.

Cannot say much about the Spitfire except that the starboard cannon is also painted black underneath and the starboard wingtip only has a yellow (probably) band on the leading edge.
The target in the background is well known. G-6/R6/Trop “Yellow 14”, W.Nr unknown, of 6./JG 53 captured Comiso airfield 13th July 1943. It was inspected by the RAF’s 3201 Servicing Commando Unit who found it to be fully operational and so RAF Command decided to send it to England. It arrived 4th February 1944, crated, at 1426 Flight Collyweston. Two moths later it was reassembled and flown for evaluation. Painted in RAF camouflage (Dark Green/Ocean Grey over Yellow, White spinner) it was given the serial number VX101. Supercharger dust filter and underwing gun pods were not fitted. On 19th May 1944 the starboard undercarriage leg collapsed during a landing accident at Thorney Island. On 26th September it was reduced to spares.

That should be months not moths.

The Spitfire in the photo should be Castle Bromwich-built EP305/X-Y(small E) flown by (possibly) F/Off Collis of 229 Sqn. Two known photos exis of this Spitfire in Comiso, the other one was taken from behind the Bf.109 and shows the Spitfire's codes to advantage.
