This video clip is taken from the film "Perfect Lady" which covers full restoration story of ML407, a two-seater Sptifire TR MK. IX also known as the Grace Spitfire.

Nick Grace bought ML407 in 1979 in a dismantled state and after 5 years of work took off with his wife Carolyn on their first flight. Apart from the substantial task of general re-assembly, the fuselage and wings were essentially as they left the factory but a large amount of the work involved stripping back to bare metal and re-riveting after treatment with modern anticorrosives - which is the main reason why the Spitfire is still operational today with no corrosion.

Tragically, Nick was killed in a car accident in 1988 but Carolyn continues to fly the aircraft.

The World's Worst Special Effects Movie?

According to the author Lonystrad, this could be the worst special effects movie ever. I must say that I've seen worse :) and besides, I found the idea rather cute. Aerial dogfight using some crudely painted plastic models as props, "flying" in the back garden of a suburban English semi-detached house on a warm sunny afternoon... makes me feel like I was back in the 1960s. Wonder if the movie authors are old enough to realize that.

Here is a nice computer-generated video recently released by Airfix, showing their two new kits announced for 2010 in a dogfight, Spitfire Mk. Ia and Messerschmitt Bf 109E. A neat marketing idea which emphasizes Airfix's current efforts to rejuvenate the popularity of their Spitfire kits.

Kent modeller Mark Lane sent us this video of his Parkzone Spitfire Mk. V in the markings of Robert Stanford-Tuck. Mark wrote:

"I was always Spitfire junkie when I was a kid. And now with some deposable income I started flying RC warbirds and Spitfires are top of my list I have three."

The show model is converted with brushless motor and Screaming 3-blade propeller.

Here is an interesting two-part video test of an RC Nitroplanes Spitfire, an almost-ready-to-fly model. As it turns out, less than wonderful in flight, unlike its full-size original. A fun and very informative hands-on test of an RC model. In the second part (below), note how many modifications were required to put the things right!

Duxford Flying Legends 2009 - video report

Here is a 6-part video coverage of the 2009 edition of Duxford's Flying Legends show, without doubt the greatest warbird show in Europe. This one was held at on July 11-12th, 2009.

This video taken from the game IL2 Sturmovik: 1946 takes you through a fictional battle between the British Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb and the German Messerschmitt bf 109E-4. The author of the movie used many user-created add-ons to bring the quality of the movie to the maximum, including a special onboard camera guns fore these wide-angle external shots of the aircraft. Also, there is a surprise guest appearance...

Some of the air-to-air shooting is fabulous, especially if watched in HD mode.

Sunset flying in Omaka

The newest addition to the airshow circuit is the Spitfire Mk. IX PV270. Restored by Brendon Deere in memory of his uncle, fighter ace, Al Deere, PV270 made its first post-restoration flight on 18 March 2009 at Ohakea, New Zealand, piloted by Keith Skilling. PV270 has been painted in the colour scheme of Alan Deere while he was RAF Wing Commander at Biggin Hill.

This video shows the aircraft flying in the evening at Classic Fighters Airshow, Omaka airfield near Blenheim New Zealand. Classic Fighters at Omaka was the public debut of PV270. The weather was perfect throughout the weekend allowing the aircraft to fly six times over the three days of the show.

How do you get a realistic Merlin engine sound in a scale RC Spitfire model? The answer is by using a dedicated onboard sound system.

This video demonstrates the first 'in airframe' test of the Benedini Merlin sound system in a 1/4 Scale Spitfire replica. While it doesn't sound loud in the video, standing by the model you really need to shout to be heard over the noise! Two speakers are mounted in the wing root pointing down while a third is mounted in the radiator.
